What the best leaders do
What the best leaders do
Leaders see a primary part of their role as developing a vision which motivates others. But how? From work with exceptional leaders in a variety of industries it seems that the key is a combination of mind-set (belief) and behaviours (actions). Whilst this top ten is not definitive, it should provide food for thought, enabling you to upgrade your leadership, motivation and vision skills:
- Start with the belief that EVERYONE can be a leader.
- Create a vision that you really believe in.
- Create an environment where leaders can learn from those they lead as well as teach others. This is a highly motivating leadership trait.
- Learn to delegate. Delegation empowers others to develop their own leadership abilities and ensures that everyone in the team is working to their strengths…including the leader.
- Develop the art of listening. Listen to everyone, no matter what their position in the organisation.
- Feel secure enough to ask for help. Surround yourself with experts who can provide all the information you need to make great decisions.
- Work at getting your personal needs met outside the workplace. When you rely on your work for your whole identity you can lose your attraction as a leader.
- Resolve issues as soon as they arise.
- Enhance your strengths by gaining new skills. A leader never stands still.
- Think ahead. Develop a vision for the future so you are always one step ahead of those you lead.
