5 ways to get your 5 a day
5 ways to get your 5-a-day - By Danielle Collins, Wellbeing Solutions Coach
We know that for good health we should be having five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. But busy lifestyles and lack of motivation mean you may be missing out. Follow these five ideas and you will be on your way to feeling healthy, happy and full of energy.
1. Drink one glass of fruit or vegetable juice with your breakfast
Start as you mean to go on! Next time you visit the supermarket, stock up on a range of fresh, unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices. Orange, apple, pineapple and pomegranate are all great fruit options. Alternatively, try out carrot and tomato juices or make your own using cucumber and celery with a twist of lime.
2. Add handful of dried fruit to your breakfast cereal
This is a quick and easy way of adding another portion to your day. Sprinkle raisins, sultanas, dried apricots or unsweetened cranberries on your porridge or muesli. If you find it difficult to eat a large breakfast, just go for the handful of dried fruit, minus the cereal.
3. Take a piece of fruit in your bag to work with you
Eat this for a quick and easy snack to keep your energy levels high.
4. Have a side salad with your lunch
Wherever possible go for a salad as the main part of the meal. If you are having a business or pub lunch, always request a side salad. And most importantly, eat it!
5. Have at least 1 portion of vegetables with your main evening meal
Go for fresh and organic wherever possible. However, frozen and tinned vegetables count as well. So even if you are busy, there is no need to not be getting your greens!
Top tip: Aim to change your fruit and vegetable choices every couple of days to get a range of nutrients and of course, the variety will keep it interesting.
Follow these five simple rules and you will be getting 5 a day everyday!
