3 ways to relax at your desk

3 Ways to Relax at your Desk  - by Danielle Collins, the UK's leading Wellbeing Solutions Coach

If your inbox is filling up, the phone keeps ringing and leaving work on time seems like a luxury, you will be in need of some relaxation.  If taking a break is just out of the question then using the following 3 easy tips, which can be followed at your desk, could be the answer.

  1. Breathe

The most effective way to breathe is in and out through the nose. Breathe in for a count of four on the inhalation, feeling your abdomen rise, and out for a count of four on the exhalation, feeling your stomach lower. Breathe like this for ten breaths. Your mind will start to unwind, the stress levels in your body will reduce and you feel more energised and alert.

  1. Relax the body

If you feel tense and tight through your muscles, a few simple exercises can lessen this pain. Start by gently moving your neck from side to side. Next, roll your shoulders backwards and then forwards a few times. Finish by circling your ankles and wrists both ways.

  1. Calm the mind

A proven way to do this is to take yourself on a ‘mini mental holiday’. Using visualisation techniques such as these are a great way of calming, focusing and refreshing the mind. Have a picture of a relaxing scene on your computer and take a few minutes to focus on this image, feeling your stresses slowly reduce. Or, if you can close your eyes for a couple of minutes and let your mind drift to a place where you feel relaxed and happy, you will be sending these positive messages to your subconscious for your long term benefit.

If you use these 3 techniques daily, as well as at times when you feel stressed or tired, you will not only have a greater sense of wellbeing but will work more effectively.
