Going where the resistance is

Going where the resistance is!

Sometimes we hear of an idea or a concept and immediately reject it.

"That's not for me" we say. Or "I don't believe in that". Even now, maybe you are reading this and thinking, "Oh, I don't need to read this bit - I'm not like that"!

Sometimes we resist ideas or suggestions for very good reasons - maybe we've tried a particular course of action before and it didn't have the desired effect. For instance most of us don't like to make cold calls. Perhaps you tried it once and were told, "We're not interested". So you learned that cold calls didn't work.

Equally, some of us find certain concepts difficult to accept e.g. that meditation can help you achieve greater professional and personal success. It sounds pretty far fetched. Where's the evidence?

Of course, through our life experiences we get a better understanding of what does and doesn't works for us. Hopefully this means we don't repeat the same mistakes too many times!

But Sometimes : We reject great ideas because we had one bad experience or because they challenge the particular view we have of the world.

I've recently been experimenting with "Going where the resistance is". When an opportunity comes my way that I would normally reject I now give it that second consideration. Do I really have good reason to pass up this opportunity? Or is it time I challenged my beliefs about this issue? As a result I am attending two fascinating workshops in the next month, moving my business to a new office, meditating every morning and starting singing lessons (all things that, by the way, I would have put off until the opportunity had passed me by if I hadn't been "going where the resistance is"!). I wonder where this approach will take me in the coming months?

3 Steps to Embracing Your Resistance!
Step1 - Make a list of opportunities available to you that you have rejected or put on a backburner.
Step 2 - Consider your objections carefully. Ask yourself "What am really afraid of?" and "What do I have to lose by giving this a try?"
Step 3 - Take the plunge. Sign up, pay up or commit yourself in some other way so that you give yourself no wriggle room!
